Online-Durchsuchungen sollen ja bald legal sein. Mir ist nur unklar, wie die Polizei das anstellen will. Entweder kooperiert die Polizei mit Microsoft, sodass bei einem Update der sog. Bundes-Trojaner aufgespielt wird, oder sie probieren es über E-Mail. Aber wenn der Benutzer nicht allzu blöd ist, und seine Software nicht allzu veraltet ist (in bezug auf Sicherheitslücken), dann sollte selbst die Polizei keine Möglichkeit haben, einen Trojaner einfach so auf ein System zu spielen. Oder es führt dazu, dass alle Kriminellen auf Linux/BSD umsteigen. Daran hat die Polizei bestimmt nicht gedacht, dass auch Computer-Systeme existieren, die kein Windows drauf haben. Ich glaub das alles ist technisch viel mehr heisse Luft. Vielleicht verängstigt es ja den einen oder anderen Klein-Kriminellen. Aber Terroristen können sie so bestimmt nicht fangen, denn die sind bekanntlich ja besser ausgerüstet als die Polizei.

A few seconds ago I quickly browsed through todays edition of our local newspaper Pforzheimer Zeitung. One headline stated that at my former school a 14 years old girl completed the leaving examination with the best possible mark -- a 1.0! She is this years youngest high school absolvent in whole Germany, and probably the best as well, too :). Now, she don't wants to concentrate too much on the book she is currently writing (IIRC this book is about the high school system and how it can be improved), but instead wants to concrentrate on her studies. Her plan is to study medicine in Heidelberg, one of the famoust universities for medicine in Germany (and probably world wide as well!?). When will she finish? In two years, or three years? :)

This morning something happended that I saw for the first time of my life and I even didn’t knew that it exists. I live in a high building with another hundred or more students. We have around four big trash cans outside the building. Yesterday evening I noticed that all four big trash cans are full, so I couldn’t put our floors trash bags into them. Then this morning, just a few minutes ago, I looked out of the kitchen window and saw a man in a uniform that is usually weared by the garbage collection mens or street cleaners. But instead of a garbage collection van there was only a very little van that couldn’t even hold the contents of two trash cans. Strange I thought and my attention grew. Then I saw what was going on. It was a special car with a kind of press attached at the back of it. The trash can is moved near the press and then the press is activated and compacts the trash inside the trash can. This procedure is done with every trash can. This way the frequency of the big garbage collection van, which I think is more expensive, can be reduced. This is what I saw today for the first time.

Den Begriff Know Where hab ich heut so in dieser Form zum ersten Mal gehört (in EPG). Bei Bedarf kann man durch Know Where zu Know How gelangen.

Bin grad zufällig auf die Seite vom John von Neumann-Institut für Computing gestossen. Die Leistung des dortigen BlueGene/L Supercomputers beträgt schlappe 45 TeraFlop/s. Was ich lustig fand ist folgende Aussage:

Die kleinste zu beantragende Einheit ist 1 Rack-Monat (= 1,48 Mill. CPU-h).

Ein Rack ist ja nicht viel ;)

I’m currently learning for the system architecture (SysArch) exam and solving the assignments. For example:

“Suppose you have to desgin the on-board computer for your next trip to Mars. What system goals would you try to achieve with your design?”

Of course the answer is quite easy. It has to be correct, robust and (power-) efficient, but not scalable:

“Scalability of your system, however, may not be a major goal as you are unlikely to find hardware upgrades along the way and you have way different problems when an armada of alien ships forcibly joins your on-board computer into their peer-to-peer system.”

Schau mal hier. Dem isch konkret krass! Hm, früher haben wir auch grosse Dinger gebaut, z.B. ne Rakete die fast bis zur Decke gereicht hat (ca. 2m hoch), oder ein riesen Schiff. Aber halt net soo gross :)

Am 16. März (in der USA ist bestimmt jetzt schon der 16. oder?) wird Jerry Lewis 80 Jahre jung. Sagt bloss ihr kennt ihn nicht? Na, der verrückte Professor. Bildungslücke! Ein genialer Komiker. Heute abend um 22:40 kommt im ZDF die Birthday-Party. Mit Michael Mittermaier, der ja übrigends, man glaubt es kaum, auch schon 40 ist.

Ausversehen hab ich grad nach “Gestern nahm er ihre Hand” gegoogled, und was kommt als erster Eintrag? Mein Gedicht :)

Irgendwie war der barmherzige Samariter immer schon meine Lieblingsgeschichte. Die Bilder sind auch echt schön. Und man findet noch viel mehr gutes Zeugs auf der Seite.

Ja Wahnsinn! Im Karlsruher Zoo gibts sogar Eisbären. Das wäre was für Julia :)

Bei MyHeritage kann man sein Gesicht mit denen von Stars vergleichen lassen. Wenn das nur mal gut geht, und ja keine Ähnlichkeit zu Mikel Jackson rauskommt :)

Am Mittwoch wurde uns in der Vorlesung Entrepreneurship I erneut über das Bedingungslose Grundeinkommen berichtet. Diesmal ging es hauptsächlich um die noch bevorstehende massive Werbekampagne.

Die Idee des Bedingungslosen Grundeinkommens ist radikal, aber aus meiner Sicht besser für uns alle. Was bringt es, die Produktivität durch Subventionen künstlich niedrig zu halten, damit die Leute ihren Job behalten? Wäre es nicht besser (und billiger!), dieses Geld direkt den Betroffenen zu geben? So verprassen wir Milliarden an Steuermitteln, nur damit Leute arbeiten müssen. Letztendlich sind wir ohne massive Automatisierung in der Produktion in Deutschland nicht mehr wettbewerbsfähig. Subventionen helfen auf Dauer auch nicht. Es muss immer eine Übergangslösung bleiben.

Die Idee ist wie folgt: Jeder Bürger bekommt bedingungslos ein Grundeinkommen vom Staat, egal wieviel er verdient. Damit kann jeder Überleben, auch ohne arbeiten zu müssen. Dies nimmt schon mal den Leistungsdruck, zur Arbeit gehen zu müssen, oder die Angst den Job zu verlieren. Somit bekommt jeder die Möglichkeit sich frei zu entfalten. Der Zwang fällt weg! Arbeit wird wieder gerechter bezahlt werden, denn keiner wird gezwungen zu arbeiten, einzigster Anreiz ist das Einkommen. Jobs, die keiner gerne macht, würden gut bezahlt werden müssen (die heute vielleicht 1 EUR Jobs sind!).

So in etwa ist die Idee. Natürlich bedeutet dies für viele ein Machtverlust (Gewerkschaften, Parteien). Aber für die Bürger hätte es nur Vorteile! Jetzt muss sich halt zeigen wer das Land bestimmt, die Politiker oder das Volk. Dazu muss das Volk natürlich erstmal begreifen, was es davon hätte, und das ist keine leichte Aufgabe. Wir werden sehen. Ich für mich bleibe optimistisch, wie immer :)

Bin vor kurzem auf eine für mich neue japanische Rockband gestossen: Mucc. Bislang kenn ich nur das Lied Mikan no kaiga von ihrem Album Kuchiki No Tou, aber das ist sooo genial, das ich momentan kaum noch andere Lieder anhöre :) Vielleicht pack ich ja an Weihnachten eine CD von Mucc aus?

On monday, after having waited for 3 weeks, my new PowerBook finally arrived. I played a bit with it and I like it.

Software installation is pretty well solved IMO. A lot of programs simply consist of one big binary file that you simply copy into your Programs folder. There are three package managers I’ve tried:

• Fink: Based on Debian tools like apt-get. Didn’t worked that well. Cannot install mozilla for example, or other X11 software.

• DarwinPorts: Worked extremly well! Installation of X11 software, such as mplayer just worked. But I wonder why they didn’t based their work on pkgsrc

• Pkgsrc: The package manager of NetBSD. Works great for console-based applications. I’ve not yet tried to build X11 software. A few binary packages are available.

Heute abend war ich auf der Gracecall Release-Party im Pforzheimer Kupferdächle.

Die Jungs machen ne klasse Musik… viel besser als all die unbekannten Bands die ich bisher so gehört hab. Laut wars auch… meine Ohren sind jetzt noch taub :)

Gestern abend schau ich so Polylux auf ARD und was seh ich da? Ein Bericht über Visual Kei und natürlich auch als bekanntester Vertreter der Szene Dir en grey. Cool :)

Some days ago, I wanted to copy all my files from an FTP server to a local directory. I looked for a program that would do this job and finally found ftpcopy (FreeBSD port ftp/ftpcopy).

The commands below did the job (substitute user, password, hostname etc. appropriatly):

mkdir local-dir
ftpcopy -n -u user -p password hostname / local-dir

The slash (/) specifies in this case the remote directory. Option -n tells ftpcopy to not delete the files from the FTP server after they have been copied.

All (important) configuration files should be RCS versioned. To put a file under version control, create a RCS directory in the same directory as the file. Then use ci and co as described below:

ci file

check file into repository and remove it.

co file

checkout file (file will be readonly, so you cannot modify it).

co -l file

checkout file and lock it (you need to lock the file prior to modifying it).

ci -u file

equal to ci file && co file.

ci -l file

equal to ci file && co -l file.

So, to modify a file already under version control, call co -l file. This will check it out in locked mode. After modifying it, use ci -u file to commit your changes and put a copy into the current directory, so that it can be read by daemons or processes.

With a file not yet under version control, proceed as follows:

1. If there’s not yet a RCS directory (in the same directory as the file), create one.
2. Put the (unmodified) file under version control by issuing ci -l file.
3. Modify it.
4. Commit your changes and check the file out, in non-locked mode: ci -u file.
